See Godrevy Lighthouse from the water

Godrevy Lighthouse stands on Godrevy Island at the far side of St Ives Bay. It is one of the area’s most recognisable coastal landmarks and makes a fantastic sight from the sea.

Travelling by boat gives you a different view of the lighthouse, the island, the open bay and the surrounding coastline. It is a great choice for visitors who want a relaxed, scenic St Ives boat trip with wildlife, views and plenty of photo opportunities.

Part of our St Ives wildlife boat trip

This is not a separate boat trip from our main wildlife route. Customers wanting to see Godrevy Lighthouse should book our St Ives Wildlife Boat Trip.

The route may include Seal Island, Godrevy Lighthouse views and wildlife areas around St Ives Bay, depending on weather, sea conditions, tide and skipper judgement.

Because we operate at sea, the exact route can change from day to day. Safety always comes first, and our skipper will choose the best route for the conditions.

As well as views towards Godrevy Lighthouse, the trip gives you the chance to look out for local wildlife around St Ives Bay.

Wildlife, seals and seabirds

You may see grey seals, seabirds and other marine wildlife during the journey. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but the coastline and bay offer plenty to enjoy throughout the trip.

A Short History of Godrevy Lighthouse

Godrevy Lighthouse has stood on Godrevy Island in St Ives Bay since 1859. It was built by Trinity House to help protect ships from the dangerous rocks and reefs around this exposed part of the Cornish coast.

Before the lighthouse was built, this stretch of coastline was feared by sailors. One of the most serious incidents was the wreck of the steamer Nile in 1854, which helped strengthen the case for a lighthouse at Godrevy.

The lighthouse was first lit on 1 March 1859. For many years it was looked after by lighthouse keepers, before becoming automatic in the 1930s. It was later modernised and converted to solar power in 1995.

Today, Godrevy Lighthouse remains one of the most recognisable landmarks in St Ives Bay. It is also widely associated with Virginia Woolf’s famous novel To the Lighthouse, inspired by the views she knew from childhood visits to St Ives.

Seeing Godrevy Lighthouse from the water gives visitors a different perspective on its history, setting and importance to the Cornish coast.
