Things to Watch Out For

One of the most stunning coastal boat trips in Cornwall. Keep your eyes peeled for:

  • Smeatons Pier: An impressive granite pier designed by John Smeaton (1767-1770). It features unique sluicing arches designed to use tidal action to scour sand from the harbour.

  • The New Pier: Built in 1864 as a "Wood Pier" to protect Smeaton's Pier; only its oak foundations remain visible today at low tide.

  • Carrack Leggo: Now the site of a car park, this was once a massive rocky outcrop that provided the granite for the local piers.

  • Porthgwidden: The east-facing beach where the original St Ives fishing community and boat-building industry began.

  • The Island: A headland (not a true island) featuring the National Coastwatch Institute, the 15th-century St Nicholas chapel, and remains of a Napoleonic gun battery.

  • Porthmeor: A north-west facing beach open to the Atlantic swell. It is the site of the Tate Gallery, which was built on the foundations of the town's former gas works.

  • The Hor: A headland scarred by mining activity and the former site of a WWII radar station.

  • Brea Cove: The site of the 1936 wreck of The Bessemer City. The cargo included timber, fur coats, and 2,000 tons of tinned food; the salvage team was famously paid in tins of salmon.

  • Penzoarsen: Meaning "turning place" in Cornish, this headland offers views to Pendeen and features 2,000-year-old stone wall field enclosures.

  • Western Carracks (Seal Island): A reef extending 400 yards from the shore. This is a primary haul-out spot for Grey Seals; sometimes 80-100 seals can be seen basking here in the sunshine.
